A federal appeals court has partially reinstated firearm bans in California and Hawaii, allowing prohibitions in parks, playgrounds, bars, and other public spaces but rejecting bans in hospitals, banks, and churches.
The Ninth Circuit Court cited historical precedents for such restrictions, particularly in areas like parks and alcohol-serving venues. However, it found insufficient historical basis for bans in financial institutions and some other locations.
Gun rights advocates, including the California Rifle & Pistol Association, viewed the ruling as a partial victory for Second Amendment supporters.
“This partially favorable decision from the Ninth Circuit shows how far we’ve come over the past decade. But this case, and our work to restore the right to bear arms, is far from over,” said FPC President Brandon Combs.
Further litigation is expected as courts continue to interpret recent Supreme Court rulings.

The Morgan Hill City Council has unanimously approved a substantial increase in concealed carry weapon renewal fees, setting them at $540. This new fee is significantly higher than those of nearby jurisdictions, with Santa Clara County charging $187 and San Jose only $25 for renewals.
GOA Opposes Proposed Lead Ammunition Ban on Public Lands
Gun Owners of America (GOA) has filed a public comment opposing the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s proposed rule to ban lead ammunition on certain public lands. GOA argues that the agency lacks statutory authority for such a ban and that insufficient scientific evidence supports claims of lead ammunition’s harm to wildlife or human populations.
