Spotlight
Senator John Thune of South Dakota secured the Senate Majority Leader position with a strong pro-Second Amendment record. Thune won with 29 votes to Senator John Cornyn’s 24, marking a victory for gun rights advocates.
Unlike his competitors, Thune consistently opposed new firearm restrictions while championing expanded gun access. “I strongly support the Second Amendment, which protects ‘the right of the people to keep and bear arms,'” Thune declared on his campaign website.
His record includes opposing universal background checks, supporting concealed carry reciprocity, and defending AR-15s as legitimate sporting rifles. In 2023, Thune introduced legislation to protect gun retailers from IRS investigations and allow interstate handgun sales. The National Rifle Association and National Shooting Sports Foundation both awarded him A+ ratings for his steadfast Second Amendment support.

Gun Rights Groups Challenge Maine’s New 3-Day Waiting Period Law
Maine gun rights advocates have filed a federal lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of the state’s recently enacted 3-day waiting period for most firearm purchases. The plaintiffs, including gun dealers and a self-defense training program owner, argue that the law violates Second Amendment rights and delays gun sales to those most in need of protection.
Charges Dropped Against Maryland Sheriff in Machine Gun Case
Federal charges have been dismissed against Frederick County, Maryland Sheriff Chuck Jenkins, who was accused of conspiring to obtain machine guns for a gun range owner’s business. The dismissal comes after the alleged accomplice was acquitted by a jury last month. At a news conference, Jenkins maintained his innocence, criticized the prosecution as politically motivated, and expressed disappointment in the justice system.
