Spotlight
A federal judge has struck down New Jersey’s ban on AR-15 rifles, deeming it unconstitutional under recent Supreme Court rulings. U.S. District Judge Peter Sheridan concluded that the AR-15 qualifies as a weapon “in common use” for self-defense, citing the estimated 24 million AR-15s owned by Americans.
The ruling specifically addressed the Colt AR-15 model but could apply more broadly to similar rifles. Despite this, Judge Sheridan upheld the state’s ban on large-capacity magazines holding over ten rounds.
Gun rights groups hailed the decision as a partial victory, and could signal a shift in New Jersey’s strict gun laws, potentially allowing AR-15 sales in the state for the first time in decades.
The CA Excise Tax is Now In Effect
As of July 1, 2024, California has implemented an 11% excise tax on firearms, parts, and ammunition sales, in addition to the existing 6% sales tax. This presents a significant challenge for California FFLs, who must now manage complex quarterly state payments.
The good news is that Trident 1’s advanced POS system is ready to help. Our updated software automates tax calculations and generates detailed reports, ensuring smooth compliance with these new regulations.

Gun Owners of America Fights Florida’s Open Carry Ban
Gun rights activists at GOA are suing to strike down Florida’s 1893 ban on openly carrying firearms after the Republican-controlled legislature rejected a repeal effort. The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court, argues the ban is a “blatant infringement of the Second Amendment” that runs counter to the nation’s historical tradition of firearm regulation.
Lummis Bill Aims to Preserve Second Amendment Rights in Wyoming
Senator Cynthia Lummis introduced legislation to protect law-abiding Wyoming gun owners from what she calls “Democrats’ blatant Second Amendment infringements.” The Lawful Purpose and Historical Firearms Act would eliminate most federal restrictions requiring a “sporting purpose” and enable the return of historical American firearms like the M1 Garand.
FPC Challenges Oregon’s ‘Ghost Gun’ Ban
Firearms Policy Coalition sued Oregon in federal court over the state’s ban on self-manufactured firearms, sometimes called “ghost guns.” Citing the long American tradition of making arms for personal use, FPC argues the ban unconstitutionally restricts the right of individuals to build their own legal weapons.
