Spotlight
New York Governor Kathy Hochul signed a law requiring a new merchant category code for firearm retailers, claiming it will help monitor gun sales. Hochul stated, “We know if someone is stockpiling ammo, that is not a good sign.“
However, the firearm industry argues this code won’t reduce crime and infringes on the privacy rights of law-abiding gun owners. Even credit card companies have expressed doubts about the effectiveness of tracking firearm purchases this way.
17 states have taken action to protect citizens’ Constitutional rights from this gun control scheme, while federal legislation has been introduced to prohibit the use of a firearm-specific merchant category code nationwide.
