Spotlight
Republican lawmakers introduced the Protecting Privacy in Purchases Act, legislation aimed at protecting Second Amendment rights from what they called “unconstitutional and relentless attacks” through the financial system.
Representatives Elise Stefanik and Andy Barr sponsored the bill to ensure gun stores receive the same treatment as general merchandise retailers.
The legislation responded to efforts by what the lawmakers described as “gun-grabbing organizations” to create specific Merchant Category Codes (MCCs) for tracking firearms purchases. While California mandated these codes, states like Florida and Texas banned their use, creating a patchwork of regulations that lawmakers said required federal action.
The bill prohibited payment networks from implementing special monitoring systems for gun-related transactions, with supporters arguing it protected privacy rights and prevented what they termed a “backdoor registry” of law-abiding gun owners.
